Alteration & Addition
Architect: Development Design
Year Completed: 2010
Project overview: Transforming this regular cottage into a majestic designer property in keeping with its 1910 Edwardian origins without detracting from the historical charm of the original build is an achievement in its self.
Every aspect of the original home, from the balcony, architraves and cornices to the ceilings were restored to their former glory in painstaking detail. An example of the level of dedication is the front pathway, which was restored bit by bit – all 2500 pieces of it.
The homeowner had bought the house a year earlier with the intention of polishing this diamond in the rough.
The work to renovate the cottage was all about restoration and nothing was skimped. There was no guesswork and no creative licence, everything was matched or replaced to mimic the 1910 builder’s vision.
The front part of the house, where three of the four bedrooms are located, is now sufficiently decadent in
the fashion of that era.
There was intense research involved in bringing this project together. Architraves, cornices arch ways and the fireplaces had to be right
The side of house remains at the retained front portion of the house, in keeping with the original design. The extension was designed to be wider, taking in that 2m, so that in width the back of the house now stretches from boundary to boundary.
While sympathetic to the front of the house the new 14m-long addition part of the house is contemporary and sleek which add instant glamour . With an open plan kitchen and living areas dominating the new space, meant the choice of material used needed to have a wow factor.
Exquisite Calcutta marble was use on all kitchen and vanity tops, with Carrara marble tiles and blackbutt floor creating a sense of warmth through out.
Site access was restrictive due to parking restrictions and tight streets.
The home is a wonderful space , light and airy, with a real sense of history and glamour.
We are extremely proud of the end result as are the clients which have commissioned our services for the third time.
Kind Regards,
